Sword of Honour Winners, PMA, Kakul, Abbotabad

The Sword of Honour winner of any Long Course is awarded to that Gentleman Cadet of Long Course who achieves an overall best performance during his entire training period at the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul. The award of Sword of Honour is considered as a great honour and it is the dream of every cadet in PMA.

IMA/PMA Course, Dehra Dun – 25 Nov 1948

The final term cadets who transferred from IMA Dehra Dun were commissioned on arrival in Pakistan. That course was called IMA/PMA Course and passed out on 25 Nov 1948. Their passing out parade was held at GHQ Rawalpindi. 

This was the  first ever Sword of owner given to any cadet.

BSUO Sadiq ur Rashid Muhammad Abbasi

  • Date of Birth: 20 May 1926 
  • Parent unit: Artillery Regiment 
  • He was from Nawab family of Bahawalpur. 
  • He was Governor of Sindh from18 Sep 1978 to 07 Apr 1984. 
  • Retired as a Lieutenant General
  • Date of Death: 21 March 2002.

The cadets from junior terms were temporarily attached to units and then joined PMA upon raising.

BSUO Raja Aziz Bhatti

  • Date of Birth: 14 July 1928.
  • Parent Unit: 17 Punjab Regiment.
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal. 
  • He embraced Shahadat on 10 Sep 1965 at Burki Sector, Lahore, in 1965 War.
  • He was awarded Nishan-e-Haider.

  • Parent Unit: 6 Lancers
  • Retired as a Brigadier

BSUO Saad Ullah 

  • Parent Unit: 14 Punjab Regiment.
  • Was awarded Hilal-e-Jurrat in 1971 War. 
  • He is the author of a book  ‘From East Pakistan to Bangladesh’. 
  • He retired as a Brigadier.

BSUO Khushdil Khan Afridi

  • Parent Unit: 10 Frontier Force but then joined 8 Frontier Force quite early.
  • In 1965, He was with 8 FF at Rann of Katch Skirmish when he got severely injured and was awarded golden strip. 
  • In 1971, as CO 12 FF  he fought 1971 War.
  • He was Col Commandant of FF – 18 March 1985 to 06 Jan 1986
  • He was Governor Baluchistan – 22 July 1984 to 30 Dec 1985
  • Retired as a Lieutenant General

He was the first who won a Sword of Honour and joined PIFFERS.

No Sword of Honour was Awarded.

There was eminent threat of war in Kashmir so 5th long course passed out 6 months earlier.

Hence 5th PMA earned the nick name of ‘Nehru Commissioned Officers’.

BSUO Abdul Qayyum

  • Date of Birth: 23 Nov 1932 
  • Parent Unit: 11 Cavalry (Frontier Force)
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal.
  • He was from a very learned Bengali family. Despite the fact that his brother was killed in military action in Dacca University in March 1971, he opted for Pakistan.
  • Honour graduate of the Fuhrungsakademie (Hamburg) and an Honorary Member of the German General Staff.
  • He resigned in 1974 
  • He was given a post (1978-89) of Additional Secretary (Policy Planning & Research) in the Ministry of Information by Gen Zia ul Haq.
  • Was President of  Institute of Regional Studies, Islamabad (1990-94).
  • He was Professor of Islamic Studies at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST).
  • Date of Death: 8 Feb 2013

 He was the first East Pakistani officer to earn a Sword of Honour.

  • Parent Unit: 13 Punjab Regiment.
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal. 
  • He had served as Commandant Command & Staff College, Quetta from Sep 1979 to Aug 1982.

8th PMA Long Course – 12 Sep 1953

BSUO Saeed-ud-Din Hafeez

  • Parent Unit: 1st Mountain Regiment Artillery
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal and Medal for Military Subjects
  • He raised 93 Medium Regiment Arty, trained them in three weeks and deployed them in Operational Area.
  • Commanded 18 Division and 33 Division Served as MGA in GHQ.
  • Retired as Major General in Dec 1985.

  • Parent Unit: 5 Horse (Probyn’s).

CSUO Usman Ali Ghani Isani

  • Parent Unit:  Regiment Artillery.
  • Joined Civil Service and retired as a Federal Secretary. 
  • He served as Chairman University Grant Commission and Vice Chancellor of Quai-e-Azam University, Islamabad.
  • He is at present Vice Chancellor of Iqra University.
  • U.A.G. Isani is a Ph.D. in Education Administration from NUML.
  • He was a Capt when he joined Civil Service.

  • Parent Unit: Guides Cavalry (Frontier Force).
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal.
  • He joined Civil Service of Pakistan and died in a road accident when he was Commissioner Swat.
  • He was a Captain when he joined Civil Service.

  • Parent Unit:  Engineer Battalion.
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal.

CSUO Esmond D’ Cunha

  • Parent Unit: 1 (SP) Field Regiment Artillery.
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal.
  • He later joined the Air OP at Dhamial and was awarded the elite Flying Trophy.
  • He left the Army in 1963 and later migrated to Toronto, Canada in 1970.
  • A few years ago his son presented him with personalized licence plates for his car SRDOFONR  proudly reflecting the Sword of Honour. You can imagine how many people have asked him what this represents!!
  • He was a Captain when he left the Army.

CSUO Agha Nek Muhammad Khan

  • Parent Unit: 10 Punjab Regiment but transferred to the Corps of Engineers in the same year.
  • Retired as Lieutenant  General.

18th PMA Long Course -18 Oct 1958

CSUO Said Afzal Durrani

  • Parent Unit: 5 Frontier Force Regiment.
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal.
  • Also served in SSG. He was airdropped in India and became a POW for 6 months.
  • Died of heart attack on 24 June 1979 during service.
  • He was a Colonel at the time of his death.

  • Parent Unit:  Engineer Battalion.
  • Got early retirement.

BSUO Syed Hazoor Hasnain

  • Parent Unit: 15 Baloch Regiment.
  • He joined SSG and was dropped in India in 1965 War. He was the only one who ex-filtrated back to Pakistan.
  • He was SJ & Bar.
  • He was Chief of Staff 11 Corps and was posted to an Inf Brigade in Malir. To pay a farewell visit to a formation on 11 July 1980, he was flying to Kohat that the L-19 aircraft crashed on a mountain between Peshawar and Kohat and he and the pilot died.
  • He was a Brigadier

In 1965 War, He was the only one who ex-filtrated back to Pakistan.

  • Parent Unit: 11 Baloch Regt. 
  • He was Vice Chief of General Staff (VCGS) when he died in an air crash near Bahawalpur with Gen Zia-ul-Haq on 17 August 1988.
  • He was a Major General.

  • He embraced shahadat on 8 Sep 1965.
  • He was a Lieutenant.

  • He is brother of Gen Raheel Sharif.
  • He was a Maj when he embraced Shahadat in 1971.

BSUO Farook Nawaz Janjua 

  • Parent Unit: 4 Punjab Regiment. It is also his father’s unit.
  • He is son of PA-6 Brigadier Mohammad Afzal Janjua, a graduate of Sandhurst, who was commissioned in 1927.
  • He was awarded SJ in 1965 War for his brave action in operation at Sulemanki Sector.
  • He left the Army in 1973 along with many other celebrated soldiers, and subsequently expired due to a heart attack in 1992/93.
  • He was a Major when left the Army in 1973.

  • Parent Unit: 13 Punjab Regiment which was also his father’s unit.
  • He left the Army early and settled in USA.
  • He is the brother of Lt Gen Zaheer-ul-Islam, ex DG ISI.
  • He was a Major when he left the Army.

32nd PMA Long Course – 11 Sep 1965

Because of 1965 War 32 & 33 PMA Long Courses were Passed Out on the same day.

BSUO Adib Anwar Khan

  • Parent Unit: 10 FF Regiment.
  • He belonged to Nagar Valley of Sakrdu.
  • He embraced Shahdat in 1971 War near Chichawatni. Kotla Jinda Ram railway station was re-named after him as Kotla Adib Shaheed station.
  • He was awarded SJ.
  • He was a Major when he embraced Shahdat

He was the first cadet from Northern Areas (now Gilgit-Baltistan) to win Sword of Honour.

  • Parent Unit ? Regiment Artillery.

  • Parent Unit:4 Frontier Force Regiment.
  • He attended Company Commander’s Course at Fort Benning, USA.
  • Married to an American lady and resigned in 1975.
  • He was a Major when he resigned.

BSUO Mushtaq Niazi received the Sword of Honour On 20 November 196537th PMA Long Course – 30 March 1966

37 PMA passed out before 36 PMA because it was converted into short course.. They (36 PMA) got regular commission after completing one year and got ante date of seniority by one day over 37 PMA which was converted into a short course therefore CSUO Kamal Alam was given C-in-C Cane instead of Sword of Honour. 37 PMA Course did not get a chance to hold Bn appointments, as 36 PMA was still there and  passed out later (on 7 May 1966).

CSUO Kamal Alam 

  • Parental Unit:12 Baloch Regiment.
  • His brother BSUO Mujahid Alam also got C-in-C Cane in 8th War Course on 18 March 1967 jointly with Company Sargent Major Nisar Sarwar. Mujahid Alam retired as Brigadier.
  • Kamal Alam expired in AFIC a few years ago due to complications as a result of heart surgery.
  • Kamal Alam also retired as Brigadier.

36th PMA Long Course – 07 May 1966

Muhammad Saeed Javed Siddiqui 

  • Parent Unit: 4 Cavalry
  • 36 PMA passed out after 37 PMA (which was converted into Short Course) along with 1st War Course and 19th Special Short Course. 36 PMA got regular commission after completing one year and got ante date of seniority by one day over 37 PMA. 
  • He left Army  in 1970s and settled in England.
  • He was a Major when he left Army.

38th PMA Long Course – 20 April 1968

CSUO Sabih-ud-Din Bukhari

  • Parent unit: 9 Engineer Battalion.
  • He is SJ. 
  • He also served as Surveyor General of Pakistan. 
  • After the retirement he served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Bahrain. 
  • He retired as Major General.

  • He had served as Commandant Command & Staff College, Quetta from Feb 2000 to May 2001. 
  • Retired as a Lieutenant General.

BSUO Syed Perwez Shahid.

  • Parent Unit: 11 Baloch Regiment
  • In addition to the Sword of Honour, he also won the Norman Gold Medal. 
  • He is known as ‘SP Shahid’ by his friends.
  • Retired as a Lieutenant General.

BSUO Syed Pervez Shahid received the Sword of Honour On 18 October 196942nd PMA Long Course -18 April 1970

BSUO Khalid Ahmed Kidwai.

  • Parent Unit : 53 Field Regiment Artillery.
  • He saw action in erstwhile East Pakistan in 1970-71, and was a POW in India.
  • Commanded an artillery regiment, a divisional artillery and two infantry brigades.
  • Instructor at the PMA, School of Artillery and Command and Staff College.
  • Graduate of the US Army Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, and NDU.
  • After the May 1998 nuclear tests, leading an outstanding team of scientists, engineers and armed forces personnel,
  • General Kidwai pioneered the establishment of Pakistan’s National Command Authority (NCA).
  • He served as DG of Strategic Plans Division (SPD) for 15 years, and is presently Advisor Development NCA.
  • He also conceived, articulated and executed Pakistan’s nuclear policy and deterrence doctrines in all dimensions, together with the establishment of the Army, Navy and Air Force Strategic Force Commands.
  • He is also the architect of Pakistan’s civilian Nuclear Energy Vision-2050 which is expected to provide Pakistan 44000 MWs of electricity.
  • The National Space Programme-2040, conceived and initiated by him, has seen the launch of communications satellite PAKSAT-1R.
  • He has been awarded Pakistan’s highest civil award, the Nishan-i-Imtiaz, in addition to Hilal-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military).
  • Retired as a Lieutenant General.

  • He was later killed in Nairobi, Kenya, by a robber/mugger. 
  • He was a Major.

  • Parent Unit: Commissioned in 5 Horse (Probyn’s).
  • He is son of General Tikka Khan (COAS).
  • He left the Army early and has settled in USA.
  • He was a Major when he left the Army.

Two cadets from 9th Graduate Course (21 April 1973) and 10 Graduate Course (20 October 1973) were awarded Sword of Honor instead of C-in-C Cane due to 1971 War. As As there were no Long Courses after the Passing Out Parade of 48 PMA (11 Dec 1971) and a few short courses and Graduate courses were run. The Passing Out Parade of the next Long Course, 49 PMA, was held on 19 April 1974. During this period only 9th and 10th Graduate Courses were given Sword of Honor.

9th Graduate Course – 21 April 1973

CSUO Ejaz Rasool

  • Parent Unit:1 Baloch Regiment.
  • He took early retirement from the Army in 1988 and settled in U.K.
